growing butterfly bushes in NC #879676

Asked July 31, 2024, 11:31 PM EDT

Hello, I'd like to plant a butterfly bush (or a comparable perennial) to be a 'centerpiece' plant in a grouping. I've read this is an invasive species. Does NC have restrictions on these? Thank you!

Expert Response

Hello!

No, there isn't any restrictions on planting butterfly bushes in North Carolina.

If you are concerned with spread you may want to consider planting a noninvasive cultivar of butterfly bush, such as one from the Lo & Behold series developed by North Carolina State University. Or consider a native shrub with similar yet noninvasive characteristics such as buttonbush, sweet pepperbush, silky dogwood, Virginia sweetspire or blue haw viburnum.  All good pollinator plants.

I hope this helps.  Let us know if you have any other questions and thank you for contacting the EMG's.
