Expert Response

Hi Becky,
Thanks for being on the lookout for invasive species, but actually that cool beetle is native in our region and is one of the biggest beetles you can find in Oregon.
That is a type of scarab beetle called a lined June beetle (Polyphylla sp.). There are several lined June beetle species that could be found in our area, but they are hard to distinguish in photos so I can’t tell which species this is. They are common, but I only see them occasionally (when I’m lucky, I think). Incidentally, even though these beetles have the month “June” in their name, the adult beetles can actually be seen in Oregon from June through August.

Lined June beetle larvae live in the ground for 2-3 years feeding on the roots of trees and shrubs. After that, they pupate and the adults emerge and fly around. The adult beetles feed on leaves but don't do any significant damage. The larvae can do some damage in orchards if there are enough of them, but mainly they are pretty innocuous. Just one of our great local creatures to enjoy…
