Necrotic Ring Spot?? #877477

Asked July 16, 2024, 1:19 PM EDT

Hi, Our lawn has round, brown rings /semi circle brown rings about 12 inches in diameter. We had a few last year, more this year. Is this Necrotic Ring Spot? Something else? How do I tell for sure? Treatment? thanks Jim

Expert Response

It could very well be what you suggest.  However, you will have to take a hard look at the actual spots as it could be something else.  I am giving you a link to a very good resource from Michigan State which describes various turf problems along with photos.  https://www.canr.msu.edu/turf/diseases

Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your quick response and the  link. Very helpful!

I am not seeing any spots/ damage/discoloration to the grass leaves (other than turning brown)

The best I can do has been to narrow it down to the following:
Necrotic Ring Spot
Summer Patch
Take All Patch
Waitea Patch
Yellow Patch

How might I narrow this down to the exact disease?
Given our wet and humid weather this year, are you seeing anything that might help discern this disease?
Am I missing something?

Thank you SO much for your help!
Jim

Have you considered they may be mole tunnels?  They don't always show up with pushed up soil but if a mole has a tunnel, the roots of your grass as hanging in the air.  Using a trowel, try digging down and lifting some of the spots to see if there is indeed a tunnel.
