Wondering if you can help identify issue with Spice Bushes #877030

Asked July 12, 2024, 6:01 PM EDT

Hi there, I have two small spice bushes that are dealing with small and larger rust spots on their leaves and yellowing of leaves. New growth initially is not affected. I think it might be fungal, but before I try any treatment I am curious if you can help confirm what is going on. Both spice bush plants are in a flower bed with nearby iris, day lillies, violets, and mulch.

The larger patches of browning look like scorch, which is caused by environmental conditions like high heat and drought stress. The tiny brown speckling might be a leaf spot (fungal most likely, though not a rust fungus, but possibly bacterial), but not one that needs treatment as it won't affect long-term plant health. Additionally, fungicides can potentially affect other organisms, and we would not recommend treating a host plant like Spicebush that serves as caterpillar food for a few species of butterfly/moth.

The planting location sounds like it might be very sunny, is that correct? (Based on the sun-loving companion plants of Iris and Daylily that you mention.) Spicebush thrives in woodland conditions, where it gets at most around a half-day of sun, or dappled light. Soil should be moist (ideally) and well-drained, though in this weather plants may need occasional watering due to the ongoing drought. The overall paler yellow-green color of the foliage suggests that they are either exposed to too much direct sun or are perhaps a bit nutrient-deprived (most likely nitrogen), since the leaves should be a richer green color.

Hi Miri,

Thank you so so much, this is super helpful and I'm glad I haven't sprayed the fungicide yet. Sounds like we will increase watering since it's been so terribly hot and dry and perhaps look at transplanting them to a different spot depending how this year goes. Always appreciate your group's expertise!!!
