Is the cherry tree dead? #876787

Asked July 11, 2024, 9:10 AM EDT

I planted this Van cherry tree bare root in late April. It grew three leaves in a cluster, but they have died over the last week. I am wondering if the tree is dead, or if it will come back next year? I planted a second cherry tree of a different variety - Sweetheart cherry and it has several leaves in different spots on it's stem. Thank you for your help!

Hello
Thank you for your question and picture.
Although I cannot tell if your tree is alive, I encourage you to be patient and continue watering when needed with a "watch and see" perspective.
Look for live buds.  Keep the site weed-free and mulched
(about 3 " deep and not too close to tree trunk base.)

If you have planted, fertilized, and watered according to the instructions you received with the trees, and it does not leaf later this summer or in the spring, then I would suspect it died.

I am sending some information on growing cherries in the home orchard.

I hope this is helpful.
