Good Evening, What are the differences, if any, between the American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Silverwood Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis Grenickel)? Is one more desirable than the other? Thanks!

Expert Response

Platanus occidentalis 'Grenickel', Silverwood™ Sycamore is a cultivar of the American Sycamore, which is a native species. Grenickel or Silverwood is a Greenleaf selection that has striking white bark, even at maturity, similar to a Eucalyptus. The white bark, large leaves, and good branching structure make this a very striking tree.

Like most sycamores, it will become a large tree reaching 75 to 100 feet tall with a similar spread, so it is best grown in an area with plenty of room such as a large estate or park. As with most symcamores it is also susceptible to the common diseases such as anthracnose.
