Pine tree decay #872516

Asked June 10, 2024, 8:02 PM EDT

Hello, I wonder if you can assist me in figuring out what could be the issue with this pine tree. For the last two years it's been showing decay in the middle area, which not only got worse this year but also expanded to the bottom. Any guidance and potential solutions you could offer would be appreciated. Thank you,

Expert Response

I don't know for certain. I don't believe the tree is diseased. It looks like winter damage to me. Perhaps last winter (2023) snow was deep covering the bottom portion. Some of the exposed needles were damaged by sun and/or drying winds. This past winter with little snow cover only made it worse. The tree looks green and healthy - so I suggest a little pruning to shape it up and with time the damaged area will fill in.
