The best time to severely prune an azalea #872430

Asked June 10, 2024, 1:46 PM EDT

I removed a bunch of ferns, revealing an azalea sorely in need of attention. I'd like to do a severe prune to resahpe it. When is the best time of year to do that? Now or wait until fall? Any other advice on doing the severe prune?

You can prune back an azalea pretty hard but we would wait until late winter into early spring to do severe pruning so it will 'wake up' and push new growth all spring and summer next year.
Doing so will sacrifice next season's flowers.

If you wanted to do light pruning on some areas you could do it now, ideally soon, and still get some flowers.

In general, you don't want to prune trees and shrubs in late summer into fall because it encourages plants to start growing new, tender sprigs and leaves, which are not likely to harden off in time before cold weather arrives and damages them.
