Hog partial paralysis #869584

Asked May 22, 2024, 10:04 AM EDT

What are common causes for partial paralysis of a 6 month old pig? She is kept outside in an adequate shelter with my kid's 4-H pigs. She has 24 hour access to food and fresh water. She has very little use of her hind legs. Thank you

Expert Response

Hi Brian,
Unfortunately, there are a variety of viruses, bacterial infections and genetic or environmental causes that can result in paralysis in swine (see https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/CNS for a listing of a few agents and their respective symptoms). A livestock veterinarian will be able to diagnosis and do any testing required to identify the cause and make recommendations for treatment. If you are looking for a local veterinarian contact, Matt Friend, DVM, with Friend Veterinary Services may be able to assist you further. https://www.facebook.com/p/Friend-Veterinary-Services-LLC<personal data hidden>44510/
