Aster yellows #866383

Does this plant have aster yellows?

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

It's too early in the season for Aster Yellows symptoms to manifest in blatant ways, and this Echinacea bud appears to be normal. (If anything, it might have a touch of fasciation, but that is not always caused by a virus.) The insect vector has also not arrived yet (they usually arrive on stormfront winds from our south around early to mid-summer).

Hi,

Thank you!

I was concerned that the plant had gotten aster yellows last year.  Is this possible. Last year I lost several plants to it.

You're welcome.
We can't rule out that a plant has a carry-over infection of Aster Yellows from a prior year, but only time will tell if the blooms or other parts wind-up exhibiting more diagnostic symptoms.
