My septic tank/gutters empty into a creek on my property. My creek water and mud are backing up and blocking my septic system from free flowing into the creek. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem without infringing on county/township rules?
Warren County Ohio
Expert Response
Hi Ted, your question has come to Ask a Master Gardener. Septic systems are a long way from master gardener expertise.
I can give a little advice. Since the H2Ohio campaign that started a few years ago, the local Soil and Water Conservation Districts have been on the alert to fixing rural septic systems. Our county has some funds to use each year to design systems that will better treat the household waste and improve the stream water all over Ohio. That is who I would contact first. They could come out and take a look and see what the problem is and If some solution could be worked out. You might have to hire an engineer who does that kind of work. The Soil and Water District probably has an engineer that they work with who can help you out. You might have to wait until they get other projects under control but you should persist in asking for help.
You might also ask Warren County OSU Extension Office if they have someone who could also help or find someone who could come and take a look at your situation. Hope this helps. Don
