Saving valued peonies, perennials. #866349

Asked April 29, 2024, 4:00 PM EDT

Hello! Appreciate your help. Having to have our tiered garden re-landscaped as the railroad ties are collapsing after 39 years. We hired a crew to build new paver walls and install new steps but not able to get to it with the rainy weather. Question being how can I go about attempting to save my plants? I realize it’ll be extremely tough on them, especially the peronies. Thinking of taking deep roots/ current soil and put them into large storage bins, keep in the shade? Project should take up to 2 weeks. The brick patio will be saved. Thanks!

Expert Response

Hi,

I think your idea of scooping them up and putting them in tubs/pots (even a tarp works) and keeping them in a shady area is fine. We aren't getting extreme heat yet so the plants shouldn't be too stressed. You will probably sacrifice your peony blooms this year but other wise you should be fine. Your finished terrace will be fabulous.
