This tree, now about 8 feet tall, has grown just under my deck for years and is now blocking the sun from the vegetable garden. Is it invasive? is it worth saving?

It is a type of Dogwood. We can't tell for sure because it looks similar to one of our native shrub species. You can compare photos withCornus alternifolia and Cornus amomum to see if those look similar.
Are the leaves alternate or opposite arrangement on the stems? They look alternate to us but it is hard to see in the photo.
It would be a personal choice to keep it. If its shading your veggie area maybe it isn't of value to you right now.

I am seeing examples of both alternate and opposite leaves on the stems. but I agree, at least I know it is a Dogwood. Thank you.
You're welcome.
