Raccoon deterrance? #866276

Asked April 29, 2024, 11:34 AM EDT

My daughter lives in Anne Arundel County and a raccoon (or maybe more than one) is using her deck for a latrine. We have cleaned it and tried filling the space with lawn furniture etc but the raccoon keeps coming back. We don't want to kill it or them, just discourage from her deck. The deck is raised (level with second floor of house), with stairs to the yard, made of a plastic resin, not wood. Thanks.

Expert Response

Unfortunately wild animal behavior is outside of the realm of our expertise, but you can inquire with wildlife biologists at the MD Department of Natural Resources. An email can be sent to <personal data hidden> (especially if you want to share photos) or, if you would like to speak to someone, they have a Wildlife and Heritage Service phone number at<personal data hidden>. The phone line is staffed during regular business hours, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, except state holidays and weekends.

If it's allowed and necessary to live-trap and relocate nuisance wildlife, the DNR also might need to issue a permit. The CDC has some information about cleaning-up a racoon latrine, but doesn't discuss methods for discouraging re-use of the site.
