Kentucky Coffee Tree Recommendation for MN #866168

Asked April 28, 2024, 1:33 PM EDT

I remember reading that Kentucky Coffee tree was recommended to grow in MN for a shade tree. In the latest information I find online on the UMN site and in brochures, it is no longer listed. Can you tell me why it is no longer recommended? Should I be concerned for my trees?

Washington County Minnesota

Expert Response

It is still listed as a great windbreak tree as well as a great tree for pollinators.  It is a large tree. up to 65 ft tall X 45 ft wide canopy.
The female tree will not have seed pods so will not have flowers for pollinators.  There is no reason to worry about your trees.  It may be that the list you saw was one for smaller landscape trees.
