Asked April 26, 2024, 6:49 PM EDT

These bugs have started appearing in my sinks and bath tub here in Kremmling, CO  (April 2024). What are they please?

Can't find them online, on ir the Colo State Extension Pest ID Handbook.

About the size of a grain of rice, black, segmented, don't move much.

Thanks for your time and help!

Expert Response

Hi Mark,

That is a dermestid beetle, they like to feed on dry organic matter. They can be pests in the home when feeding on carpet fibers and other textiles, clothing made from animals (cashmere, fur, leather, feathers), dried foods (flour, cereals, nuts, dog/cat food, dried fruits, spices, etc.), taxidermy, etc. If you have pets, try to vacuum frequently. These beetles sometimes feed on accumulations of pet hair.

Management centers on excluding the beetles from their food source. Inspect your home for items that the beetles may be feeding and breeding in. Heavily infested items should be discarded. Freezing items for 72 hours will kill the beetles. Vulnerable items should be stored in airtight containers. Thin plastics (e.g. grocery bags) can be chewed through easily by the beetles.

Inspect undisturbed corners/crevices close to potential food sources, this is where the beetles usually go to pupate. Look for the presence of beetles, their larvae, frass (pelletized poop), and their shed skins. Live individuals can be vacuumed up.

These beetles often enter from outdoors. To prevent their entry, use caulk to seal any structural gaps around doors/windows/vents, or wherever else they may be.

Let me know if you have further questions.
