This is a garter snake - specifically, a Western Terrestrial Garter Snake (Thamnophis elegans). These snakes are common along the Colorado Front Range. They are harmless to humans and pets, and beneficial in that they eat pest insects and small rodents.

Thank you for the identification. One of our students picked it up with her hands and toss it out. It's nice to hear these are the types of snakes you actually want around (but not in your office).
