Asked April 26, 2024, 10:43 AM EDT

Hello, I'm looking to plant some edibles in my backyard and we have a dog (who is notorious for eating things in the yard) so I want to be sure I'm not planting things that will poison him. Are any of the following plants/fruits poisonous to dogs? Plums Cherries Nanking Cherries Serviceberry Gooseberry Currants Honeyberry (aka Haskap Berries) Hazelnuts Thank you so much, Nicole Groenke

Expert Response

I am giving you a link to the ASPA list of toxic and non-toxic plants.  You will have to use your common sense.  For example, yews are listed as toxic but will your dog actually eat the shrub?  Does your dog eat your indoor plants?  Some of them are on the toxic list.  You can also talk to your vet.  They can tell you if your dog takes a bite and doesn't like the taste so doesn't eat any more, if that one bite will be a problem.  https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/dogs-plant-list
