Expert Response

Hi Janet,

Coddling moth is what causes the "wormy apple" and fortunately there are a number of ways (including spraying) that can help reduce/eliminate this pest in your fruit. We have a good fact sheet on the subject that includes cultural controls and trapping, as well as sprays: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/codling-moth-control-in-home-plantings-5-613/

If you decide to go with chemical controls, you'll want to start spraying at about 3/4 petal drop when the tree is nearly finished flowering. You'll follow the directions on the label of the product you're using (see the recommendations in the fact sheet link above) and likely do multiple applications on specific intervals until harvest. It's very important to follow the directions on the label and use the product EXACTLY as written. If the tree is very large or you cannot provide good coverage using sprays, it may be better to contract the service with a tree care professional.
