box moth #865898

Asked April 25, 2024, 2:38 PM EDT

Hello, I’m inquiring about the spread or potential spread of the box moth in Livingston County. We would like to plant some boxwoods and would like to know if you are recommending against planting them due to the presence of the moth in Livingston County. thank you,

Livingston County Michigan

Expert Response

Livingston County is within the box tree moth quarantine zone, so there is a risk they plants could be damaged by box tree moth.

Yew and holly are alternatives if you are looking for a shrub that retains its green color year-long. Several native shrub recommendations are here: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/native_plants_for_michigan_landscapes_shrubs

Thanks for your reply, David. Our subdivision abuts the Brighton Rec Area and the yews in our commons areas, some 30 of them, have been demolished by deer. Our plan was to replace them with boxwoods. I was hoping to learn how extensive the problem is in Livingston County so we can assess the risk of planting them. If the situation is barely emerging and so far under control, that leads to one decision. If the moth is marching across the County and multiplying quickly, that would mean another decision. The boxwoods were our only one-for-one plant replacement solution. I know you can’t make my decision for me, but I would appreciate some data about the prevalence of the moth in the County and your projection of anticipated spread.

thank you,

There isn't any publicly available data available yet beyond that the insect has been detected at multiple locations in the County. It's too soon to know if this will become widespread or isolated in just a few locations. If you choose to plant new boxwoods, you can always preventatively treat with a pyrethroid, one in July and once in September.  Sorry I can't give a prediction to the level of risk to boxwoods. The pest is too new right now to understand its rate of spread.
