Found a swimming beetle in my dog pool. I cant find any information about them being in Oregon #865830

Asked April 25, 2024, 3:11 AM EDT

I was cleanning out the kiddie pool my dogs use & while doing so, I found this bug in thr pool & was concerned it was a tick. But every search image generator label it as a water beetle that are not in Oregon. I could be wrong but figured I'd contact someone someone more educated about insects than me. I still have it in a closed container, but I killed it with rubbing alcohol. I won't provide my whole address as stated above, but I'm located outside of city limits of Sweet Home.

Hi Christy,
That's really neat! It is an adult predaceous diving beetle (Family: Dytiscidae). This family of aquatic beetles is really diverse with over 500 species in North America. I'm not sure how many species we have in Oregon, but they are certainly fairly common here.
Here is a photo of a predaceous diving beetle seen in WA that looks pretty similar to the one you found...

If you want to know the genus (or perhaps species) that you found, you could mail or drop off your specimen to us at the OSU Plant Clinic and we could tell you more about that particular predaceous diving beetle. Here is a link to instructions for submitting a sample if you would like to do that...
