White bugs? on Hellebore #865806

Asked April 24, 2024, 7:41 PM EDT

Hello, I’ve started noticing these white spots/things on my Hellebore plants. They are a few years old and otherwise have been very healthy over the years. Is this something to be concerned about? Thanks!

Expert Response

Nothing to worry about -- these are aphids (and the white residue is their shed skins, as they molt and grow larger with maturity). They are very common on a variety of plants but, despite occasionally reaching high populations, do not tend to cause plants serious damage and can be ignored. If you want to reduce their numbers without using a pesticide, you can blast most of them off the foliage and stems by spraying the plant with a strong jet of plain water from a garden hose. If needed, a low-toxicity pesticide spray of either horticultural oil or insecticidal soap could be used to kill them, though such sprays need to contact the aphids directly to work, and spraying leaf undersides on low-growing plants can be challenging. Fortunately, a variety of beneficial insects (and even small birds) eat aphids, so they will soon abate on their own even if you don't intervene.
