Plant id #865778

Hello, I have several of these bunches of grass throughout my yard. I also see many around town. They seem to throw a lot of seeds. Is it invasive? Is it a native grass? It does look pretty when it is cleaned up, but I don't want to promote pests. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi Mary and thanks for your question and picture about the "bunch" of grass in your yard. They say a weed is any plant growing where you don't want it so most grasslings growing outside a lawn are "weeds". I'm 90% sure this is Poa annua, annual bluegrass that, yes, is considered invasive in a lawn. It is easy to remove the small patches with a weeder or shovel and any neighbors with fancy single species lawns will thank you for removing the before they go to seed.

There is another side to the grass story, however. Some people just leave the different species and call it a "climax lawn." It will have brown patches in summer without lots of water and some people can live with that, my family included.

So remove it if you want or leave it if you don't have picky neighbors. Lawns are going out of favor lately anyway!
