Time to trim hydrangeas #865773

Asked April 24, 2024, 4:13 PM EDT

Hello, I have a set of Annabelle Hydrangeas that I forgot to trim. Now they're budding - is it still OK to trim them or should I leave them alone for the season? Will I still get the flowers on top? Any other care tips for them is appreciated. Thank you

Dear Geoffrey,

Thanks for reaching out! Here is a UMN Extension article on pruning hydrangeas (scroll down to the "smooth hydrangea" section): https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/pruning-hydrangeas-best-bloom

Since they are already budding, I would not trim them this season. The flower buds will still grow, and in fact, you may have a larger shrub than prior seasons.

Good luck!
