Asked April 24, 2024, 2:31 PM EDT

Hi, Do you have recommendations on the best product to cover a newly seeded lawn? I live in Keizer in the willamette valley. I would prefer not to use peat moss.

Expert Response

Dear Kelly,

Thank you for contacting us about top-dressing your lawn. As you are probably aware, peat moss in not considered sustainable or environmentally-friendly. Unfortunately, the OSU publications have not all been updated to reflect that information.

However, the following article provides a comprehensive guide to installing and renovating a lawn. Instead of peat moss, you can top-dress with any fine textured mulch including sawdust, fine fir bark mulch, compost, or ground-up grass straw.

I hope this information is helpful. Please write again any time you have a gardening question.
