Starting a new garden #865730

Asked April 24, 2024, 12:47 PM EDT

I am starting a new garden from scratch and I have no idea what the PH level should be, lime, soil content etc. How should I go about testing this and if the soil is way off how do you balance it out?

Thanks for your question.

We will be glad to help you. Your first step should be to take two or three different soil samples from various places in the area where you want to have your garden. These, then, should be sent to the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory for analyses. These will include a determination of soil texture, the amount of organic material, pH level, nitrogen level, phosphate level, and potassium level. For each soil sample, fertilizer recommendations will be given. You will receive written reports back of these analyses. Upon your receipt of these, please send us pictures of each report and we will be glad to interpret them for you. Before collecting and submitting your soil samples, you should contact the Testing Laboratory for further instructions. They will also be able to provide you cost for each soil analysis. See:

Good luck. Thanks for consulting with us.
