Hi,

We don't see the purple flowering plant you are referring to. Could you send a photo of that? There are a few different common lawn weeds with various shades of purple flowers this time of year.

The first photo looks like a type of plantain. There are a few different species so it may not be the one shown in the link.

The second photo is a dandelion

For both of these weeds and some others, you can look for a granular lawn care product with 2-4 D, triclopyr, or dicamba. We can't recommend brand names but if you look for the words 'granular systemic' and check the chemicals listed on the bag it should have those listed. Be cautious if the product has dicamba and you are spreading it near trees or shrubs. Dicamba can travel into roots and kill trees. Just follow the label directions on application and steer away from the edge of trees.

You can also start to practice some general lawn care guidelines we recommend to help avoid getting weeds like these in your lawn. Mow at a higher height, around 3-4 inches with sharp mower blades. This fall you can aerate and overseed with a certified weed free grass seed to help increase the population of turf grass to outcompete the weeds. Also in the meantime, you can get your soil tested to determine if the pH (acidity) level, organic matter, and nutrient levels are in the optimal range for turf grass.
