How to deter Something that is eating my buckeye tree's leaves #865678

Hello!
I have a 7 foot tall buckeye tree that was planted in my yard almost 2 years ago and I live in an urban residential neighborhood of south Minneapolis.
Both last spring and this one, "something" is causing the ends of the branches to be torn off - assumedly from eating the tasty salad of leaves that is unfolding. Once they are fully unfolded, the problem ends. This year, I have tried to deter it by spraying a deterrent with egg solids on the leaves. Maybe it's helping a little - but still there has been some munching. I'm afraid I will end up with a tree that just looks like a bunch of dead/leafless branches eventually. Two pictures attached - one of an end from last year and one of the overall tree.
What do you think is doing this? (squirrels?) And how can I minimize this activity?

I agree that it is likely squirrells. See the following web pages or if the links do not work, search on "What eats tree buds?" Both of these pages have some solutions suggestions.

Hi Linda -
Thank you for your quick reply!
I think I found something on Texas A&M's website that sounds like a possible solution though I've never tried it: metal flashing. The spray isn't working great and it would become impossible for me to do netting on a tree (height). Note - the tamu link came up Error 404 Page not found for me. Below I have included the one that has all the various topics - and the second is the specific one with appropriate advice. Do you have any tips on using the flashing?

These questions are assigned by computer to U of MN Extension Master Gardeners. We answer questions based on our personal experience, education and research. Anytime a link does not work, do a search on the subject. The second time I did a search on "are squirrels cutting my tree leaves.edu" I received other sources. The ".edu" sends you to research based sources. Other sources may or may not have good information. I have no ideas on using the flashing. Good luck!
