weed killer application #865662

Asked April 23, 2024, 7:24 PM EDT

I have an especially bad case of weeds both in my lawn and around the yard this year. I applied Ortho Weed be gone Max yesterday. But today I realized that I should have used 2 oz instead of 1 oz of the solution. I'm thinking I need to reapply but I'm not sure when. I literally have hardly any lawn however I want to preserve whatever is there as much as I can. I'm thinking of waiting a day or two To reapply the 2 oz solution. Would that be acceptable? I just want to kill all the weeds. The new weeds that are all over our at least a foot tall!

Expert Response

Sue: I am having trouble understanding what you are facing. Has there been any mowing at all so far this spring? Is there any grass at all?

The product you used is fairly effective on a variety of weeds. One of the herbicides in the mix does have the ability to stop some weed seed germination after application. But it also can affect roots of trees and shrubs that might be in the soil under the lawn. So do not apply more than more 1 oz at this time

It will take some time to see the impact on the weeds. Be patient. Then you need to mow and remove the weed debris. Then, over-seed the lawn with grass seed and be ready to water and manage it so that you get a strong turf. That will slow the weed seeds.

I am concerned that I don't have a good picture of your dilemma. If you want to send pictures of the situation you are facing or want to talk more about your options, you can either respond to this response in the Ask Extension system or email me directly at <personal data hidden> or call my mobile phone at<personal data hidden>.  Chip Bubl OSU Extension Agent/Columbia County (recently retired) .
