Will trees grow from suckers? #865647

Asked April 23, 2024, 5:33 PM EDT

I just dug up a very long root of a Buckeye tree that was removed several years ago. The root had multiple suckers growing off of it and I considered planting a section of the root in an area that I'd love to have another tree. I heard that trees will not grow from these suckers. Is that true? Will suckers from Buckeyes be hardy enough to grow into full fledged, sturdy trees?

Expert Response

Hi Sandi.
Your question is interesting in that most people wants to know how to kill the suckers.  Suckers are trees growing out from the horizontal root of the parent plant.

The answer is yes if given the right conditions.  Buckeyes require well-drained soil and can get anywhere from 20-40 feet so please pick a suitable site. Here's a link that has a list of buckeye's characteristics and needs.
