Keep Or Remove Burlap #865586

Asked April 23, 2024, 12:27 PM EDT

Last fall I tilled up an area in my front lawn and planted a Midwest wildflower mix*. Before the snow came, I covered with some burlap to keep the leaves and weed seeds away. Just wondering if the burlap will prevent the mix from growing - will it be able to get through the gaps, or will it stunt the growth. Should I keep it or remove? Expert Response

Pull up the burlap.  It will interfere with your seedlings.  Also, at one time burlap was all cotton and gradually fell apart.  Now many contain synthetic materials too and do not do so.  You will have to maintain your new area this year and probably next year too.  Weeds will grow and have to be pulled.
