Early culling of peaches #865486

Asked April 22, 2024, 5:53 PM EDT

Our young peach trees are loaded with fruit and we feel there is too much. How much is too much and how many should be culled.

Expert Response

This doesn't look too bad. Where there are clusters of two or more you might remove all but one, otherwise, the fruits should average a minimum of six inches apart on the branches throughout the tree. To maximize the percentage of large, premium fruit, a spacing of eight to ten inches would be preferable.

For more information on thinning and other management techniques of peaches see our fact sheet Planting and Early Care of the Peach Orchard.
