I am removing 40 year old Railroad ties in a terrace, can I plant vegetables? #865404

I am removing a railroad tie terrace and replacing with stone boulders, is the soil safe to plant vegetables to be consumed? Is there a time where that soil will be safe?

The hydrocarbon chemicals in the railroad ties break down over time.  It is also unlikely they would enter the plant unchanged.  My concern would be if the ties were treated with a heavy metal such as lead or arsenic, which would remain in the soil.  You could get a soil test done for lead:
