Maple saplings in lawn #865286

Asked April 21, 2024, 8:49 AM EDT

I have two year old sodded lawn and a maple tree in the yard. The maple seeds were bad last year. I tried picking them up with the mower but this spring my lawn is beginning to look like a maple tree farm! What should I do to get rid of these maple saplings?

Expert Response

Hi James,
There are a couple of options. You may continue to mow, and the seedlings will eventually die off due to lack of leaves to photosynthesize. Not an immediate fix, but with patience this will work to kill the seedlings.

You may choose to do spot treatments of herbicide for broadleaved plants. Keep in mind that one application will likely not affect the tree. However, if overused, or used improperly, broadleaved herbicide can affect the health of tree as trees are broadleaf plants. One properly used application of the product generally do no harm the tree. If you do choose to use herbicide, always read and follow label directions.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
-Julie
