Asked April 19, 2024, 11:22 AM EDT

Garden is 25' x 35'...pollinator garden, filling with natives, including blueberries and hydrangeas...I know that those shrubs need more acidic soil,..,should I separate those areas from the flower beds when sending samples?

Expert Response

Hi Roseann,

Thanks for contacting Ulster County Cooperative Extension.

Re blueberries and hydrangeas: yes, please bring a sample from where you have them planted (or intend to plant them).

Re other areas of the flower bed: yes, please bring a separate sample for these areas.

A few other soil sample tips:

- dig down 4-6 inches and take a sample where the roots will be growing.

- we only need 1/4 cup or less of soil for each sample site.

- clearly label each bag with its sample

- we will ask you to complete a form for each sample and will ask what you intend to grow in that area, so have that in mind - or bring a list.

You can drop off samples from 9-5 M-F at the Extension office in the Hannaford Plaza. Master Gardeners will do the soil tests and call you back with the results. If you want to speak with a Master Gardener Volunteer, call <personal data hidden>.

good luck!
