Genetically different paw paw seeds #865034

Asked April 18, 2024, 6:21 PM EDT

I started paw paw trees from seed from 1 fruit and I am ready to plant the seeslings in the ground to a permanent location. From what I read, you need at least 2 genetically different trees to produce fruit. My question is will the seeds from one paw paw fruit produce genetically different trees? Meaning should I plant my seedlings near eachother or should I look for another source for a seedling to plant with mine?

Expert Response

The seeds in one fruit will almost certainly have unique genes, and so should be compatible with each other.
Though an unrelated tree might be better for pollen diversity, it's probably not necessary to source another tree.
