Lawn question #864966
Asked April 18, 2024, 9:26 AM EDT
Hello,
We had our backyard regraded by a landscape company and thus, the grass was torn out. They have placed grass seed and straw with a nylon looking mesh.
We had a weed and feed service scheduled to do a pre emergent crab grass treatment and fertilizer. Should both treatments be canceled for this season?
Is there a benefit for the pre emergent crab grass treatment at some point this season? The grass is beginning to grow already. (we still have our front yard grass intact; should that be treated with fertilizer and pre emergent crabgrass treatment?).
Thank you!

Expert Response
I recommend cancelling the pre-emergent treatment for this spring and weed treatment on the new lawn area until after it's been mowed at least three times. New grass seedling aren't helped by chemicals meant to kill plants. I also recommend planning to water this new lawn over the summer to minimize young turf loss from both summer heat and drought. You can treat the older lawn as planned except it's getting too late for crabgrass pre-emergent treatment. More info here:
