Weedy grass ID #864907

Asked April 17, 2024, 4:46 PM EDT

Hello,

I have an extensive, weedy bed of Iris, mostly overrun with a grass that sends rhizomes throughout. I would like to use a graminicide that is specifically labeled to treat this grass and specifically labeled to not damage the Iris. Can you help me to correctly ID it?

Expert Response

Hi Patti, thanks for the question.

The rhizomes (underground stems) and the "clasping auricles" (see links below) suggest that this is the infamous quack grass which is very difficult to eliminate from the landscape.  Sethoxydim is active ingredient in post-emergent weedkillers that specifically targets grasses. Iris is listed as tolerant of some of these products. It is safe for irises when used as directed. Apply it directly to the quackgrass, avoiding contact with your irises.

Glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide that can, kill most quackgrass rhizomes; however, it can also harm irises if it comes into contact with them. Painting the herbicide onto the grass leaves rather than spraying will help prevent contact with the irises.

Be sure to read and follow the label.  The label is the law.

I hope this is helpful.

Hello,

Wonderful; thank you so much! I had thought it might be quack grass but I’m no expert on *clasping auricles!*

I’m working on a large, commercial area where herbicides are my best tool. I’m going to follow the suggestion of a Sethoxydim product like Bonide ‘Over the Top’ and do a test patch. Wish me luck!

I recently finished my Pesticide Applicator’s Licensing procedure and I am thankful to the MSU Extension group for all the services you provide!
