When is it safe to plant impatiens and not worry about frost? #864848

Asked April 17, 2024, 11:14 AM EDT

Impatiens are in stores now but always under a roof. When is it safe to put impatiens out in the garden?

Washington County Oregon

Expert Response

Thank you for your questions, Angie.  These "tender" plants survive in covered garden stores, where they are protected from the wind, and often have supplemental heat.  (And the concrete stores heat.)

Impatiens are hardy in USDA zones 10-11, where temperatures are never under 30.  So, they are considered annuals in our region.  You can plant them now, but you run the risk of losing them if we get another freeze.  Although they prefer shade in the summer, planting them in full or partial sun this early will at least give them warmer soil.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!
