When should I prune my magnolia tree? #864846

Asked April 17, 2024, 11:08 AM EDT

I have a magnolia tree which didn't bloom this spring. The leaves have not come out yet but are getting close. I am wondering if this would be a good time to prune it. It has a couple lower branches which need to come off to give it a better shape. Also is it wise to put fertilizer around the base of the tree? Thank you

Expert Response

It would have been best to remove those branches when the tree was dormant.  Otherwise, pruning spring flowering shrubs is done after they bloom.  But cut those branches off now.  I am surprised your magnolia is not blooming.  Perhaps it is now being shaded by other trees.  If you want to fertilize, do so lightly.  Like other trees, magnolias take nutrients from the soil around it so if it is near a lawn, the lawn fertilizer is available to it.
