Blueberry Variety Suggestion #864743

Asked April 16, 2024, 1:21 PM EDT

Hi, We love the flavor of Maine wild blueberries but they don't seem practical for a home garden. Are there other blueberries that grow well in VT that would have closer to that flavor?

Hi Gary,

Thank you for contacting the UVM Extension Master Gardener Helpline. What a great question! You sent me exploring possibilities here, and I think I'll try this myself now.

Wild Maine blueberries are "lowbush blueberries", yielding fruit that is about half the size of the typical nursery stock cultivars. I did find a great article on growing wild Maine blueberries at home. You need the right soil conditions, but there is no reason these could not be cultivate in VT. The suggested nursery stock comes from WA, MI, and ME.

See https://extension.umaine.edu/publications/2073e for an article on "Growing Wild Blueberries at Home", and this includes a link for where to order the plants.

They should be planted in their own plot. To establish a new wild blueberrry patch you need acidic well-drained soil in a sunny location. Take a soil sample to check pH. Apply sulfur to bring the soil pH to 4-4.5. See this fact sheet for recommendations on applying sulfur https://extension.umaine.edu/blueberries/factsheets/management/254-cultural-management-ph/

Pinch off blossoms for the first two seasons so the plants establish strong roots. Mulching, watering requirements, fertilization and pruning are contained in the aforementioned article.

Good luck and let me know if you have other questions.

Hello Gary:

Betsy has given you some excellent resources and information! I wanted to include a link to the Soil Testing Lab where you can get your soil tested and make appropriate amendments to the soil, as needed to grow healthy wild blueberries - https://www.uvm.edu/extension/agricultural-and-environmental-testing-lab
