How do I start the process(soil test) #864733

Asked April 16, 2024, 12:05 PM EDT

I want to test the soil for my lawn and I'm not sure where to start. I have all shade in the front yard, and all sun in the back yard.

Good Morning!  Thanks for reaching out.  Below is a link to the instructions on how to either order testing kit(s) from our online bookstore or pick them up at your nearest Extension office and the cost.

Soil testing through MSU Extension - Soil Health

I will assign your question to a soil expert since it sounds like you're wondering if you should maybe test in both the front and back yards.

Best wishes this growing season!

Hello,

If the front and back yards of your house have different type soil or are being used for different type plantings they should be tested separately. If you had back fill brought in to a portion of your yard it could have a different soil profile as well.

You can get a soil test from the Kent County Extension Office 775 Ball Ave. N.E. Grand Rapids, MI 49503. However, you should call ahead before stopping in to make sure of availability. Their number is<personal data hidden>. They are typically open 8-4, but you shoud check on the time when you call. Soil tests are also available online. I am including a bulletin with more information on soil testing and the link to order online is in the bulletin.
