Scrub elm trees growing next to my foundation. #864723

Asked April 16, 2024, 11:10 AM EDT

We have several small elm trees that are growing close to our house. They are impossible to dig or pull out. Is there a product to use to penetrate these trees systemically? Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi and thank you for the question.

Liquid stump killers are commonly used to accelerate the decomposition of tree stumps after cutting down trees. These products typically contain chemicals that help break down the wood, making it easier to remove the stump or facilitating its natural decay. Here's a general guide on how to use liquid stump killer effectively:

Follow these steps:

1. **Prepare the Stump**: If the tree has not already been cut down, use a chainsaw or handsaw to cut the tree as close to the ground as possible. This will make it easier to work with the stump.

2. **Drill Holes in the Stump**: Use a drill bit to drill a few holes into the top of the stump. Space the holes evenly across the surface and make them deep enough to reach the center of the stump.  1 hole works too if the stump is small in diameter.

3. **Apply the Liquid Stump Killer**: Follow the directions on the liquid stump killer product for the recommended application rate. Typically, you'll pour the liquid directly into the holes you drilled. Make sure to saturate the inside of the stump with the stump killer.

4. **Cover the Stump**: Place a plastic sheet or tarp over the top of the stump to prevent rainwater from diluting the stump killer and to keep pets or wildlife away from the treated area.  I have used a soup can to cover small stumps.

5. **Allow Time for Decomposition**: The liquid stump killer will start working to break down the wood of the stump. This process can take several weeks or months depending on the size and type of tree. Check the stump periodically to monitor its progress.

Before using any stump killer, be sure to read and follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer on the product label. Different products may have varying application methods and safety precautions.

Please let me know if you need any more help on this project.
