How to know how much chelated iron to use for a mature silver maple with cholosis #864633

Asked April 15, 2024, 3:51 PM EDT

Hi, There is a silver maple about 30 -40 feet tall, and I (a large adult) can hug only 2/3 of the trunk in old town Lafayette in front of the home we own. An arborist we consulted with said the dead branches around the ends of some of its branches indicate chlorosis - iron deprivation. I got Fertilome liquid chelated iron one gallon. The guaranteed analysis says its 3.25% chelated iron. It also has traces of copper, manganese and zinc. The instructions are not clear about how much I should use. They only say for lawns and trees apply one pint of product mixed with one pint of water for each 500 square feet. But they don't say how often to do that. I mixed a half gallon with water and distributed it under the drip line in January or February. I'm not seeing any signs of difference, but it has not leafed out yet. My questions are: 1. How much of this product is right to use with this tree? How much chelated iron is too much and how much is not enough? 2. When I know the right amount to use for one treatment, do I treat it every year, or how frequently? 3. Is there a better product, or application method? 4. Is there a cheaper way to do it - this gallon was $26. PS - I'm concerned my email will filter your response. Would love a text confirmation about when an email is sent or response at<personal data hidden>. With much appreciation Charley

Expert Response

Hi Charley,

We can't provide any advice on a specific product, but recommend following the instructions on the packaging and calling the manufacturer if instructions for use and application are unclear.

It will likely be challenging to know whether the iron addition worked as nothing has leafed out just yet so you may have a better indication in the coming week. Here is an article with more information about iron chlorosis:

If you want our tree care team to come out and come take a look at the tree, we can send you more information on that.

Best wishes,
