Hi Nancy,

Thank you for the question.

There are a couple of reasons why your golden pothos might have brown spots on its leaves. The most common culprits are improper watering and light conditions.

  • Overwatering: This is a leading cause of brown spots on pothos leaves. When the plant is overwatered, the roots can't get enough oxygen, and they start to rot. This can cause the leaves to turn brown and eventually fall off.
    • To avoid overwatering, be sure to let the top inch of soil dry out completely between waterings. You can also stick your finger into the soil to check for moisture. If the soil feels moist, wait a few more days before watering.
  • Underwatering: While less common than overwatering, underwatering can also cause brown spots on pothos leaves. When the plant doesn't get enough water, the leaves will start to wilt and turn brown.
    • To avoid underwatering, water your pothos when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch.
  • Light: Pothos are known for being adaptable to a wide range of light conditions, but they do best in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and cause brown spots. On the other hand, not enough light can cause the leaves to lose their variegation and turn a solid green color.
