Painted hickory borer #864562

Asked April 15, 2024, 10:04 AM EDT

Found borers on a live tree in my yard. Since last fall the woods behind me is being cut down. They just started burning the brush this weekend. This picture was taken yesterday. I see none on my tree today. Do they damage live trees? Should they be treated?

Lenawee County Michigan

Expert Response

The disturbance to the brush and warm temperatures probably woke them up from their overwintering. These beetles usually only attack dead or dying wood. If your tree is healthy, it's just a coincidence that they are congregating and mating there. No need to treat the tree.
