Expert Response

This looks like a Dekay's Brownsnake. They are a native species, not often seen in home landscapes (due to development and habitat loss), and not harmful to people (they are not venomous). We can't tell how large it is exactly, but Dekay's snakes are very small when mature (only about a foot long) and this might be an adult. They are valuable in gardens as they consume organisms we consider nuisance pests, like slugs and snails. If you're curious to learn more, the Snakes of Virginia web catalog has detailed information about their biology (along with other technical info. for ID).
