Hi Melissa,
Thanks for reaching out. You can do a combo of all three-layering with organic material, adding store-bought raised bed soil, and incorporating homemade compost.
Here's how you might proceed:
Step 1: Layering with Organic Material: Start by layering the bottom of your raised beds with sticks, cardboard, leaves and other organic material you have on hand.
Step 2: Adding Raised Bed Soil: Next, add a layer of store-bought raised bed soil. This provides immediate structure and nutrients for your plants.
Step 3: Incorporating Homemade Compost: Follow this with a layer of your homemade compost. Mixing it into the top few inches of the raised bed soil and organic material will introduce beneficial microorganisms and nutrients.
I recommend spraying water with a hose between layers to help the soil settle in all the nooks and crannies. Just be aware that the bed may settle a bit during the growing season.
Over time, the organic material will break down, enriching the soil and improving its structure. You will need to incorporate more compost next season but this method combines the immediate benefits of raised bed soil, the long-term benefits of compost, and the soil-building advantages of layering with organic material. It's a great way to create a healthy, sustainable growing environment for your plants.
Have a great growing season!
