Too many yellow leaves on Gardenia? #864543
Asked April 15, 2024, 2:37 AM EDT
Hello,
I planted several Gardenia Jasminoides August Beauty last fall. In reading online, it appears that the spring is when their leaves turn, however, it's hard to know how much is "normal" versus "in distress". Could anyone take a look at the attached picture and give me a thumbs up or down? If not looking great, any tips on how to make them happy would be appreciated. :)
THANK YOU!

Gardenias prefer acidic soil. Be sure to be mulching w/ pine straw or other acidic mulches. Also, iron deficiency can cause yellowing. (This is because iron cannot be taken up if pH is too high.) You are right that some yellowing can be due to normal senescence. Check new foliage for health. Clemson, https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/gardenia/, has a good article discussing yellowing and fertilizer requirements. Check it out for more info.
