Expert Response

Pruning shears and mechanical tools do not transfer virus. Virus is moved by either grafting plants that already have the virus to another plant that does not (so it comes with the plants with propagation), or it can move by insect vector. The insect vectors for Grapevine Red Blotch Virus are still being investigated, but those candidates that spread it are very inefficient (do not spread it quickly).

The question about vine removal is not one to be taken lightly. Therefore, I cannot provide a suggestion until I know more information. Please set up a time to discuss this with me by phone. You can find my contact details here:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/people/patricia-skinkis.
